Pierre Trudeau's significance to Canadian Law

Pierre Trudeau was one of the greatest and most admired leaders of Canada. During the sixteen years as Canada's prime minister, he accomplished many great tasks to make Canada a unique and better country to live in. He did two very important things while he was in office. These include the passing of the Official Languages" Act, which officially made Canada a bilingual country, and he also put forth the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which was included in the new Constitution act of 1982. It is because of these accomplishments that he was a very significant man in Canadian law and for that matter, in Canadian history. .
From the beginning of the time as prime minister, Trudeau was determined to establish bilingualism in Canada. He wanted to have more of a French Canada then a French Quebec. This was an extremely difficult act to carry out because, many people opposed bilingualism in Canada at the time. However, as people got more exposed to French language and culture, the bilingualism idea got more and more accepted. Also, in order for the bill to be successful, the government had to change their mentality from that of "bilingualism" to "multiculturalism", which is what the Trudeau government did. The official languages" act was finally passed in 1969. This act made English and French the official languages of Canada. Trudeau provided French Canadians with the same rights as the rest of the country, which is something every citizen of Canada deserves. .
In 1982, Trudeau introduced the charter of rights and freedoms, and the constitution act, which are undoubtedly his greatest achievements. The charter of rights and freedoms presents Canadians with fundamental freedoms, voting, languages, equality, and aboriginal rights as well as gender equality and rights for the accused. Canadians were given freedoms of opinion and expression, belief, thought, religion, and conscience. It also encouraged freedom of the press.
