Battle of saratoga


            The Battle of Saratoga or (Freeman's Farm).
             The first battle of Freeman's Farm occurred September 19, 1777, it is also known as the first Battle of Bemis Heights. The battle began on the morning of the 19th when British General John Burgoyne began to move his army of three columns south to attack Patriot General Horatio Gates. Gates was headquartered about four miles from Burgoyne at Bemis Heights, which is just below Saratoga, New York. At Freeman's Farm the British general's right and center columns were confronted with hostile fire led by troops under Colonels Daniel Morgan and Henry Dearborn. It was here that fighting was centered through out the duration of the battle.
             The patriots used the woods and gullies surrounding the area to their advantage and fired at the British with uncoordinated effort. By late afternoon the British had lost some 600 men and the patriots were on their way to sure victory. It was at this point that German reinforcements came from the river road and hurled themselves at the patriot troops. This allowed Burgoyne to steady his troops and gradually force the patriot troops to withdraw.
             The second battle of Bemis Heights took place on October 7, 1777. At this time winter was approaching and General Burgoyne was forced to retreat to join his forces with those of Sir Henry Clinton who was stationed on the lower Hudson River. On the morning of the 7th Burgoyne sent out 1500 troops to scout General Horatio Gate's position at Bemis Heights. By the early afternoon they had encounter the American left guard and were fully engaged with the troops Gates had sent to meet them.
             The British suffered over 400 casualties in less than an hour and began to fall back. At this point Benedict Arnold, without orders, took command and pursued the British to their camp on the Hudson River. Fighting ceased in the late afternoon when Arnold was wounded in the leg. .
