The Ku Klux Klan

When most people think of the Ku Klux Klan, they automatically think of hate crimes and support of slavery. This is an extreme overgeneralization of the Ku Klux Klan. It is true that the KKK has done hate crimes and did support slavery but that is not all they did. But many people do not realize that they spurred a "super patriotism" much like that after the September 11th attack. Unfortunately their negative counterparts overshadow these positive effects. .
The first fact that many people overlook is that the modern KKK is not the same as the KKK that was around after the Civil War. There have been 3 different versions of the KKK. The first was after the Civil War during Reconstruction, the second was between 1915 and 1944, and the final one was spawned in response to the Cold War and still is around today. In this report though I will only cover the original KKK.
The first Ku Klux Klan was started in 1866 in Pulaski, Tennessee. It was originally styled as a social fraternity that was made to provide entertainment in the form of harmless practical jokes. But the KKK found that the African Americans of the South were superstitious and believed that the KKK was a group of ghosts and were frightened of them. So the KKK sent out nightriders to control the more unruly African American bands. As a result crime went down drastically where Dens of the KKK were established. .
But many corrupt white men thrived off the fear of the population so when crime went down they were not happy. Groups of African Americans had made militia patrols that would not be needed if crime went down so they banded together to destroy the KKK. They would open fire on members of the KKK who had not done anything more dangerous than things like modern Halloween tricks. The KKK had actually benefited the community up until that point. But when they were fired upon they followed suit. Thus it is actually the fault of corrupt Northerners and free African Americans that changed the KKK from a harmless group to the hate group imagined today.
