Popularity of Fast Food

Soon afterward, the hens are carelessly thrown into minuscule cages where they are forced to spend the rest of their miserable lives. Unfortunately, the ending of these dejected lives is not peaceful but instead is painfully wicked. Although the Human Slaughter Act requires that animals be stunned before they are butchered, this law is designed to be self-regulated. Sadly, I have spoken personally with butchers who proudly boast that they never abide by the guidelines set forth by the Human Slaughter Act. It quickly becomes apparent that farms across the country collectively choose to ignore the guidelines because nothing exists to enforce their adherence. Consequently, each farm animal experiences agonizing pain in death. Hens are often lynched upside down and their throats slit while they are perfectly conscious. Cows fare much worse, as they are skinned alive as they dangle hanging from their hind legs. Like their chicken friends, the cows also unmercifully have their throats slit as they are fully conscious. They hang painfully gasping for air as they slowly suffocate and die. The public health costs of hog factories are equally daunting. A U.S. survey published this spring found that people living close to hog farms in North Carolina where such factories first originated experienced more headaches, runny noses, sore throats, excessive coughing, diarrhea and burning eyes than residents of communities without hog factories. None of this is surprising: according to other U.S. studies, 25 percent of all workers employed by hog barns suffer from bronchitis due to the corrosive nature of hog waste. A 1997 Iowa study found that the methane, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide spewing from a 4,000-hog operation caused respiratory illnesses in people living up two kilometers away. .
