Aids

AIDS is a deadly sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by HIV, the Human immunodeficiency Virus.
The name "AIDS" stands for "Acquired Immune Deficiency Virus.".
AIDS is a virus that has quickly spread since the infection was first discovered during the 1980s.
In the United States, there are about 800,000 to 900,000 people who are HIV-positive, and over 300,000 people who are living with AIDS.
It is now the leading cause of death of men, and the 4th leading cause of death in women between the ages of 25 and 44 in the United States. This rate was even higher during the1990s, when no one knew very much about this virus; however there have been many new forms of treatments that have cut this rate significantly.
AIDS and HIV are viruses that once they are inside the body, they are constantly attacking the body's immune system, and manage to get into and destroy the specific cells which are the directors of the immune system, called T-cells or CD4, in the immune system, that that help the body to fight off infections. Even though the T-cells can regenerate themselves, they can not usually put up a strong fight against HIV because they can only regenerate for a limited amount of time when HIV is attacking them. Sometimes, people may contract HIV, but in a very low level, and because their bodies are strong enough to maintain their T-cells, they can remain healthy. These people are known as long-term, non-progressers.
When HIV is attacking the T-cells, patients usually lose a lot of their immune system and eventually their immune system is completely worn out and weak. When this happens, the immune system cannot fight off infections, like a healthy immune system would. .
When a person's T-cells/CD4 count decreases they become at a greater risk for opportunistic diseases/infections (or sometimes called "AIDS defining illnesses), which are various infections and certain cancers that affect the body, because of a low CD4/T-cell count, and a weakened immune system.
