The Future of Business Management

Work teams will be able to communicate more effectively due to the ease of inter-office communications and the quick availability of necessary information.
All of this high-tech equipment has led to the advance of EDI, or electronic data interchange (www.onlinewbc.gov). This is the computer-to-computer exchange of business information that enables businesses to exchange useful information much faster, cheaper and more accurately than most paper-based systems (www.onlinewbc.gov). This type of technological advance leads to lower costs because of reduced processing time, lower mailing costs and minimized unproductive time. This allows businesses to quickly reap the benefits of improvements in overall product or service quality and greater business opportunities.
Firms must also identify the jobs that need to be done and determining who will perform the tasks (Dessler, 2001, Sec. 1). This is referred to as the organizing function of management. Besides the necessity of adaptation to the changes in technology, businesses must practice what Rod Walsh and Dan Carrison (2001) call "Hands-off management". This is the understanding that other people in an organization can perform some of the duties of management as well as or better than the actual management. The loosening of control strings does not necessarily diminish the manager's importance. It is important for organizations to understand that employees are working in an organization to make the organization run more smoothly and to build their own skills (Walsh & Carrison, 2001), not overthrow the current management structure.
Moreover, it's essential to remind these employees that the management cannot guide the organization into the future without the help of its ambitious employees. All in all, Walsh and Carrison contend that getting "out of the way of your employees" is the way to keep employees motivated, aware of the vision of the organization, and in tune to the strategic plan of the firm (2001).
