Local P9 versus Hormal Final Case Question - Negotiations

Analyze the forces keeping Local P-9 together and those fracturing its unity. How did the split in the ranks affect the negotiations?.
While the Local P-9 had very strong leadership who were able to effectively organize and rally their members, the extreme non-conciliatory position they took towards management caused them to lose the support of the national leaders and eventually their own members. In particular, the lack of support from UFCW was extremely detrimental for the local leaders in their drive to obtain concessions from management. It provided management with an excuse not to negotiate with the local leaders, and it hurt morale within the union.
Guyette and Rogers took a very hard line, and used a power position from the outset. They determined they would make no concessions to management. The local leaders were very good at riling up the union members and having them show solidarity and a unified front to management. The union became a source of pride and offered support for many of the workers. In addition, Rogers" "Corporate Campaign" brought national attention to the Local P-9 union and instilled self-esteem and importance to the union members. Initially, the union leaders were also able to get the town to support them, and many of the worker's families got involved and backed the union's cause.
However, there were many forces at work that were eroding the unity within the union, and were detrimental in the union's fight for management concessions. From the outset of negotiations, there was an opposition group within Local P-9 that valued their jobs over not conceding to management. More importantly, there was a lack of support from UFCW international. The national leaders felt that Guyette and Rogers were on a "suicide mission" and would never accomplish the goals they laid out for the membership. The national leaders publicly stated that they did not agree with the methods and plans of the local leadership.
