That time the piglet got away because the children were still too innocent to do such a thing, but when they became frustrated and the bickering began, the need for meat was evident. When the time came, Ralph being the leader of the group assigned the Choir as the hunters, and Jack as well to supervise and lead them. "Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood Look! We've killed a pig"(72). This was proof that the beginning of the destruction of civilization that they once knew was starting to diminish. The boys have started to realize what has happened and what has to happen in order to survive, taking another stop out of their shell of good and into the ocean of evil. The killing of the first pig was the start but was not the finish; there would be more death and not just piglets. .
Unfortunately death does occur both in civilized societies and in native cultures, it is a part of life. The death of Simon though, is unexpected. Simons was a Christ figure in the novel therefore with Simon out of the picture, the religious reasoning has opened up and the boys have abandoned Christ. "A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly"(168). This proves that Simon did not know what would happen to him when he came crawling out of the forest, he did not know he would be attacked by the savages that mistook him for a beast. His dead body washing away out to the ocean symbolizes that the Christ figure is not on the island anymore, and also that the savages had no clue to what was real and what was not, they were fully back into their evil self, knowing what they had done, they had murdered Simon! Also the painting of the faces in the group symbolizes that they feel the need to kill more, and this means they have turned even farther to savagery. "For hunting. Like in the war Like things trying to look like something else"(66). Now that the group has gone after the Christ figure the leader of the former group is not safe either.
