This novel takes place in present day in the suburbs of Chicago. One of the central characters of the book is Captain Rayford Steele, an airline pilot. He is happily married to Irene. They have two children named Chloe and Rayford Jr., nicknamed Raymie. Irene his wife is a devout Christian struggling to get her family to embrace her beliefs. She often tries to get her family involved in church activities usually to no avail. Raymie is the only family member who willingly accepts his mother's beliefs. .
Suddenly, during a routine flight, Rayford Steele's life is changed forever. In an instant his wife and son disappear without a trace along with countless others around the world. During his attempt to come to terms with his loss, Captain Steele struggles to understand this unbelievable event. Captain Steele then embarks upon a journey to explore all possibilities for this occurrence. He forces himself to closely re-examine his own religious beliefs. He comes to the sad realization that he, daughter Chloe and countless others around the world were "Left Behind" when Christ returned to earth to take true believers to heaven. Perhaps this is God's final effort to get the attention of every person who has ignored or rejected him. This intriguing story causes me to examine my faith and to re-evaluate my religious beliefs. .
Following the unexplained disappearances, those left behind struggle to come to terms with the loss of loved ones and friends while searching for answers to explain their mysterious disappearances. Rayford Steele reluctantly falls back on his wife's beliefs and seeks out her church for the answer. It does not take long to determine that very few parishioners from his wife's church are still left. To his surprise, the remaining parishioners are in receipt of a tape made by the senior pastor with instructions for the tape to be played if ever everyone seemed to disappear.
