The Invasion of Russia by Napoleon and Hitler had many similarities. Napoleon's invasion to Russia took place in June 1812 and Hitler's invasion to Russia June 22, 1941 they both occurred during the early summer, Napoleon and Hitler's target was to capture Moscow. They both expected a quick victory so they did not prepare them selves for the harsh Russian winter.
Russia used the same tactics on Hitler as they used on Napoleon they burned everything in site grain fields, they slaughtered livestock so as to leave nothing to the enemy could eat and they retreated. Napoleon entered Moscow in September 14, and found it in flames Napoleon and his army stayed in the ruined city for fine weeks they were there till mid October too late to advance farther and perhaps too late even to retreat. Napoleon than ordered his starving army to turn back as snow started to fall in the beginning of November Russian raiders attacked Napoleon's ragged retreating army many of Napoleon's surviving soldiers were walking barefoot using pieces of wood as their cane many soldiers died from wounds, exhaustion, hunger and cold finally in the middle of December the last survivors straggled out of Russia. In September 8 Germans had surrounded Leningrad. Seeing that Leningrad would not surrender Hitler went to Moscow the capital of the Soviet Union, Hitler entered Moscow on October 2, 1941by December Germans had advanced to the border of Moscow. Soviet General Georgi Zhukov counterattacked he had 100 fresh Siberian divisions and the cruel Soviet winter on his side. As temperatures fell the Germans in summer uniforms no food retreated. Their fuel for their thanks froze, tanks weapons trucks became worthless. .
Napoleon's and Hitler's worst mistake was believing it would be a quick victory and not preparing themselves for the winter which was what really defeated them.
