Catherine the great


            Princess Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt-Zerbst, later Catherine the Great of Russia was born on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, Prussian Kingdom. Her father was Prince Christian August of Anhalt-Zerbst. Her mother was a very strict person and grounded her daughter for anything she did wrong. Her parents werent happy in there marriage, therefore didnt spent much time together. Her mother traveled a lot to her family and Sophia sometimes traveled with her. She didnt receive much of an education. Sophia in her childhood visited Zerbst, Hamburg, Berlin and other cities. From that time she remembers one thing very clearly a meeting with an old priest who told her mother: Your daughter will have a magnificent future. I see three crowns on her head.
             Another important event in the live of the young princess happened when she was 10 years old. She meets her future husband Carl Peter Ulrich. He was one year older then her and reminded her of a grasshopper. He was dressed as an adult in a wig and an army uniform and looked at his guardian with terror all the time. Later Sophia's mother told her that he could become the king of Russia or Sweden. He was an orphan and her second cousin. Sophia who also wasnt very looked after felt sorry for Peter. .
             A few years past by and her mother again mentioned Peter Ulrich. Elizabeth his aunt became the empress and claimed Peter to be her successor under the name of Peter Federovich. Now there was a lookout for a future wife for Peter. Sophia received an invitation to Russia from Elizabeth the Great. This happened cause of the memories of Elizabeth of her dead fianca ©, who was Sophia's uncle. Sophia wasnt informed why they were going to Russia, but her father wrote her instructions on how to behave. From her home till the Russian border they traveled without letting anyone know who they are. On the border they were met by a big delegation bringing them expensive gifts from the empress.
