The operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and MacOS have evolved dramatically since the first protocols were introduced. .

Windows began as a partnership between Microsoft and IBM to make a user-friendly operating system. Microsoft was supposed to create an OS/2 program for IBM PCs. However, they developed Windows along side the OS/2 program. When the two were not compatible Microsoft and IBM went separate ways and Windows was marketed by Microsoft. Their growing popularity made them one of the largest software corporations in America today. One of Microsoft's first operating system was MS-DOS. This was a text-based system and it required very little hardware in order to run. Although it is generally obsolete today, some operating systems still require it in order to function properly. Most computer users will never see or use their DOS program. Microsoft next created Windows 3.11. This was the beginning to the Windows frenzy that now includes almost ten different versions. Each new upgrade of Windows makes the computer more user friendly. However, each new version requires more and more hardware, memory, and function ability. Windows most popular version is Windows 98. This operating system can be found on many of today's desktop computers. The latest version of Windows is WindowsXP, which claims to not only work better, but it also claims to speed up a computers desktop, while it also fixes minor glitches. .

The Apple computer industry began as an effort of Steve Jobs and Jeff Raskin to create a computer that was cheap and easy for the everyday user. Macintosh has a very similar history to Microsoft. They began with a non-graphic operating system and evolved into a graphic operating system much like Windows. Their operating systems include MacOS 6-MacOS X. The Macintosh operating system is used for Apple computers and is generally not IMB compatible. This means that a person must buy an entirely different type of program if they choose to use Macintosh.
