The drought ruined the soil and farmers could no longer grow any goods. The wheat farmers, who were thriving before the drought, became devastated. Their ways of life and sources of income were shattered. Farming was a mass means of trade and production. ⊸".At other times a cloud is seen to be approaching from a distance of many miles. Already it has the banked appearance of a cumulus cloud, but it is black instead of white, and it hangs low, seeming to hug the earth. Instead of being slow to change its form, it appears to be rolling on itself from the crest downward. As it sweeps onward, the landscape is progressively blotted out. Birds fly in terror before the storm, and only those that are strong of wing may escape. The smaller birds fly until they are exhausted, then fall to the ground, to share the fate of the thousands of jack rabbits which perish from suffocation."⊸, one person said. This hardship is seen in "The Grapes of Wrath". Many families of Oklahoma left for California to try and start new lives as the Joad family did. .
             "The Grapes of Wrath" is a reflection of what life was like on the west coast of America during the 1930's. The Dust Bowl had affected all farmers. It was a person struggle for the migrant workers. Joad family was hit as hard as all the others were struggling during this period. In this novel, Tom Joad is returning home from prison and finds his family packing up to move to California. The Joad family is tested during this relocation and some of the family ties fall apart. As many others who traveled to California, the Joads were faced with many issues. .
             One of the problems was related to over population. There were not enough jobs for the people who migrated to California. The Depression was present in California and they felt the same impact as the Americans on the East coast. Poverty was also an issue that the Joad Family dealt with.
