Nationalism is defined as having beliefs in a nation, but should Canada become more nationalistic? Having beliefs in your country is a good thing, it could even be a great thing but when can it turn into something that is bad. There are many reasons's that say we should be more nationalistic.
To me pride is the number one thing for becoming nationalistic; it shows that you love your country and that you are glad to be there. If you were to go to a sporting event you can see how many different races and cultures come together to support there team. It gives a sense of belonging, a feeling that they are a part of something progressive, unique, and proud. When our country is successful our pride grows we choose certain people to represent our country because of what they do and we want to show everyone else what our country is made of.
If we knew more about our country maybe we would appreciate it more but we only learn about our Canadian history in grade twelve unlike our neighbors that are being taught American history as early as grade six. .
On the other hand becoming more nationalistic might show arrogance like the Americans already have, and that would just cause others to dislike us, give us a bag image. Having to much pride in you country can lead to violence like raids after sporting events. It can even put people against each other for example in the United States after the September 11th bombing all the Muslim people were stereotyped as dangerous. In some extreme cases like Germany in the 1940's under Hitler's ruling where they thought that they were the superior race and everyone else would have to pay the price. The United States are compared to Germany because they both have shown extreme acts of violence .
I think of nationalism as a bad thing, you can tell by just looking at all our historic events in the past, they are all based around one nation trying to be the strongest.
