Critical lens

A Child Called "IT" By Dave Pelzer.
According to the anonymous critic, "In Literature, evil triumphs but never conquers." In other words, evil can take over a person for a period of time and have its fun but it won't ever succeed in the end. This idea is clearly evident as illustrated in A Child Called "IT" by Dave Pelzer.
In Dave Pelzer's A Child Called "IT", the mother's behavior illustrates the truth of the critic's statement. The protagonist, Dave Pelzer, struggles with his mother, Catherine Roerva, and her antagonizing habit of constantly beating him. Through the author's use of imagery, the reader is able to feel the hardships of the child and experience how the critic's statement comes to life through each page of the book. Although the abuse from his mother breaks him down, Dave makes a promise to himself that he would not let her evil ways manipulate him to lose faith in who he is and who he could be. He states, "Her words had no effect on me"(86). Showing his strength in his ability of not letting her evil words get the best of him, he keeps his head held high and tries his best to never look down. .
Although he held on for a period of time his mothers" words eventually began to sink in his head. His mother begins to get to him and she makes him believe that he is worth nothing, especially with the fact that she doesn't even call him by his name; she calls him "the boy". Also his mother makes him believe he is the cause of everything gone wrong in the house, especially the separation of his father and her. His mother gets him to a point where he hopes that one day she would finally get the courage to actually kill him, with all the attempts she has already made. Soon he even begins to lose faith in God. He thinks God doesn't care about him anymore because he hasn't answered his prayers. The love he once had for God turned into hate. Dave states "God had known my struggles for years, but He had soon stood by watching as things went from bad to worse"(152).
