Would you leave your family for your own freedom? In order to experience happiness, would you give up everything you have grown to know? In society today, there are many women like Edna, who want to follow their own dreams, to march to the tune of their own drummers. Thought we don't hear about it much, it goes on frequently, we all probably know a woman who wants to follow her dreams and aspirations, but has responsibilities to tend to, so they feel like they are trapped, and keep to themselves. The journey of personal fulfillment can bring you freedom, but also leave you in solitary confinement in the end.
Edna begins to feel the constraints being a mother and a wife, in an old fashioned society. She is determined to follow her own dreams and become her own woman, living by no standards. With this, she is determined to find her own fulfillment. Through her experiences of this journey, she realizes, she was alone in this ordeal of her life. "There was no human being whom she wanted near her except Robert; and she even realized that the day would come when he, too, and the thought of him would melt out of her existence, leaving her alone (139)." .
Robert feels as if his love for Edna is not strong enough to be in a relationship. The note which is written by Robert makes it clear to Edna that she is ultimately alone in her awakening. When Robert decides to not bother the boundaries of accepted convention, Edna confesses the depth of her solitude. ""Good-bye-- because I love you." He did not know; he did not understand.She looked into the distance, and the old terror flamed up for an instant, and then sank again (140).".
The journey through life can be a hard and difficult road, and finding ourselves can be an emotional roller coaster. We realize who we really are, not who we are supposed to be. Society has a great impression on everybody, when we do not live up to its standards everyone seems to turn against you, and you find yourself with only a few in your corner.
