Cornwallis

I"m Charles Cornwallis was born in London on December 31, 1738. My family was wealthy and had many connections. I obtained my first military commission in 1756 and then went to a military school in Italy. This schooling is what eventually led to my extensive military service for the British Army. The Seven Years" War broke out during my time in Italy. During this time I served in the British Army where I was an aide-de-camp in Germany. I entered the House of Commons in 1760 and two years later, when my father died, I became Earl Cornwallis and was elected to the House of Lords (Summary 1).
Throughout the Revolutionary War and afterwards I had many important achievements. I volunteered for my first military action in 1776 and sailed to America as a Major General. I participated in the Battle of Long Island where I outflanked the Americans and forced them from New York. A few months later I was defeated by Washington, who slipped away after I thought I had successfully trapped him on the Delaware. I regained my reputation, however, at the battles of Brandywine in the fall of 1777, and Monmouth in the summer of 1778 (Cornwallis 818). In 1780 I played a major part in the capturing of Charleston, dealing a great blow to the Americans. In the summer of 1780 my forces again defeated the Americans, another devastating blow to the Americans. Finally, after being forced to retreat to the coast, I surrendered to George Washington's Continental Army in 1781, thus securing victory for the Americans (Summary 5). After the war's conclusion, I returned to England where I was appointed Governor General and Commander in Chief in India. I later became the Viceroy of Ireland and was again elected as Governor General of India (Charles 29-30).
I couldn't have achieved many of these accomplishments without my motivation to become a great war hero back in England. I wanted to establish myself as one of the greatest generals of the time to serve in the British Army.
