Foundations of a totalitarian Nazi state in Germany in 1934?


He employed the contemporary photographer Heinrich Hoffman to promote his autocratic style of rule through photography . This did not mean that he was responsible for all decisions in the Third Reich or even that he initiated all policies - far from it - but it did mean his decisions could override all laws, rights and systems. The Fuhrer principle meant that Germany was mortalised in flesh and blood by its Fuhrer. The position of Fuhrer established Germany as a totalitarian state, everything and everyone was bound by, one view and one voice, the Fuhrer's, and ultimately responsible to him.
             The Schatzstaffel - guard unit or SS were formed as Hitler's personal bodyguards in 1925, they represented the most loyal Nazi SA. When Henrich Himmler took over the SS in 1929 they began wearing the distinctive black uniforms and Death's head symbols and became the party's police force. The SS under Himmler now represented the pinnacle of the Aryan race, the greatest, most loyal and most racially pure in the Reich. When Hitler became Chancellor in 1932 the SS contained 52000 men, up from 280 in 1925, and they became not only the party's police and security force but also Germany's. By the start of 1934 most of Germany's police forces were co-ordinated under Himmler's SS. In April 1934 the Gestapo - Prussia's secret police force, where co-ordinated form Hermann GÖring to the SS. The Gestapo would become an infamous part of the Nazi dictatorship, despite the fact that at their height there were only 28 Gestapo agents for every 8 million Germans . After the co-ordination of the Gestapo, GÖring and Himmler would subsequently plot the assassination of the SA commander Ernst RÖhm, during the "Night of the Long Knives". Even that event helped Gleischaltung at it co-ordinated the SA under the SS. In July 1934 the SA concentration camps were co-ordinated by the SS. Theodor Eicke commandant of the SS camp Dachau, had turned the camp into "a model of efficiency-, which was what Himmler required from all the co-ordinated camps.
