Pablo Picasso


             Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain. His parents were Jose Ruiz and Maria Picasso. Picasso's artistic career lasted more than 75 years. He created art works such as paintings, sculptures, prints, and ceramics. Picasso contributed greatly to art history such as cubism. .
             Pablo Picasso visited Paris in October 1900 and traveled back and forth from Spain to France frequently. He moved there in 1904. In Paris, Picasso painted café scenes, landscapes, still life, and portraits of friends. .
             In 1901- 1903, Picasso began to develop his own style. This period became known as the " Blue Period-. During these times, Picasso used only tints and shades of blue. The paintings he created during this period showed the poverty, helplessness, and sadness of the people he painted. .
             The period of 1904- 1905 was known as the " Rose Period-. He painted with only reddish hues. These paintings were less sad and dull in color. Also during this period, he met Fernande Olivier, who he later would marry. She would later appear in many of his paintings. .
             African tribal art influenced Picasso greatly. Picasso was greatly interested in African art, which began to come into Europe. He owned a few African masks himself. The faces of the people he painted had oddly shaped faces, similar to the African masks. Picasso began to use "earth tones- and natural colors which is also used in African Art. He also sculpted some figures, which resembled African characters. The influence of African art can be seen in Picasso's Les Demoiselles d' Avignon. The women in this painting seem to be wearing masks and their bodies are oddly shaped. This painting was one of the first cubist works. .
             Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 1073 in Mougins, France at the age of 91. .
