Denzel Washington is the lead character as Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. Vicellous Reon Shannon plays as Lesra Martin, a 15 year old teenager. Also with actors Liev Schreiber as Sam Chaiton, Deborah Kara Unger as Lisa Peters, and John Hannah as Terry Swinton; who are three Canadians that adopted Lesra. The remaining actors are Dan Hedaya, Debbi Morgan, David Paymer, Harris Yulin, Clancy Brown, Rod Steiger, and Garland Whitt.
The plot of the film is fairly easy to understand. Rubin Carter was falsely accused of murdering three white people in a Patterson, New Jersey bar in 1966 and was sentenced to life in prison. Once Lesra learns about Carter from his book, "The Sixteenth Round" that he wrote in prison, he becomes inspired by him and is determined to set him free. When Lesra meets Carter in jail, they create a strong bond between them and connect by writing letters to each other. Throughout the movie, Carter struggles against prejudice, injustice, and will do anything to get out of prison. .
Denzel Washington gives a stunning performance and makes the movie very dramatic. Vicellous Reon Shannon is great, with his strength and emotion throughout the film. Last, Liev Schreiber, Deborah Kara Unger and John Hannah have power in their voice and are convincing to motivate Lesra. All the actors are fairly easy to understand through the movie, if you"re following the story.
