A gang is defined as, any group of people who engage in socially disruptive or criminal behaviour usually within a defined territory, and operate by creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation in a community (Webster, 88). Many are loosely defined, but some use a logo, a name, a certain color, or specific article of clothing for identification. From dark city streets, to suburban areas teen gangs roam freely. In reality, many would think a gang is a downhill twist that can result in much damage both emotionally and psychically.
More than 25% of Canada's homicides are gang related. Crime rates are up, and .
approximately 6000 people in Canada have been killed or injured in gang fights.
Teen gangs are bringing 20% more guns and 27% more drugs into communities .
which were once quiet areas (www.geocities/gangs.ca, 2002).
These gangs require immediate attention because the longer they are left ignored, the worst they will become. Gang members usually range from the ages 11 to 22. . Gangs are notorious for being involved in a variety of crucial acts such as, grand theft auto, auto and residential burglaries, criminal mischief, weapon possessions, drug sales and or use, and loitering in neighborhoods and around businesses. Also, violent crimes, such as battery, aggravated battery and even murder are always possibilities when confrontation ensue between gang rivals. These gangs are made of people from all different walks of life, from rich families to homeless individuals. Teen gangs are becoming too prominent in society and the best solution is to have full community involvement which includes improved law enforcement, better parental control and more extra curricular activities.
Firstly, better law enforcement would help decrease crime rates and gang involvement. With police patrolling the streets, it is less likely that gangs would be free to wander. Therefore, obligating teens to follow curfews set by the city would help decline crimes and make communities protected from vandalism.
