A burnning Question

What if my essay were to turn into a story? Would the teacher accept that? The purpose, after all, is to develop ones writing skills for college. Essays are good, their writing is a necessary skill required of all students, no doubt, but what about other forms of literature? One not encouraged by teachers since elementary, the story. Are we expected to contain our imaginations, fit them into the pre-selected mold of an essay? I think not. We should be allowed to let our imaginations fly, with no boundaries, no guidelines, no inhibitions.
"Because the five-paragraph essay is a chosen vehicle for measuring a student's writing proficiency, it is essential that each master this patterned format writing to score well. As part of that patterned process, the student needs to develop specific thinking and organizational patterns that will aid in the timed creation of an essay that state and other testing is demanding." This selection, taken from a website entitled, The Five Paragraph Essay, is the perfect example of what is expected from students today. The site goes on to give the structure of the essay: "The five paragraph essay follows a defined format. The first paragraph introduces us to the thesis of the essay and directs us to the three main supporting subtopics. The second through fourth paragraphs are all similar in format. They individually restate the subtopics, and are developed by giving supporting information. The fifth and last paragraph restates the main thesis idea and reminds the reader of the three main supporting ideas that were developed. All of these paragraphs are important." Students are given a chance to write "freely," but how is following a set structure anywhere near free? I do not believe it is. True the student may choose any topic, can select their own preference of words, the voice of the paper, and the ways in which to narrate. Nevertheless, I do not believe that these choices are enough.
