Z For Zachariah

" She carefully watches his every move: "Suppose he was crazy A murderer? What would I do?" However, when she observes him from a distance when going for a dip in the pool to cool off, he cheers and she finds his voice very nice and reassuring. He seems more human from the moment he takes off the suit and dresses in normal clothes a further likeness for him is when he shows friendliness towards Faro the dog. In the end Ann befriends Loomis after overcoming her initial fears.
Loomis bathes in a creek unaware that it is contaminated. Then he fails to come out of the tent that he sleeps in outside Ann's house as he has radiation sickness. Ann becomes increasingly worried and goes to check-up on him. This is when she discovers that he is seriously ill. She dedicates this time to nursing Loomis back from the brink of death: "She tries to bring down his temperature by soaking one of her father's handkerchiefs with .
alcohol, and every hour she would rub his back, chest, arms, neck and forehead with it." This shows us that Ann is a caring and compassionate individual, instead of her being fearful of the stranger like she was at first. She cannot bear the thought of him dying. Her prayers were answered when he did not end up in the "Land of Nod.".
Ann finds Loomis "quite nice" and " almost handsome." To find pleasure and purpose in life is at the forefront of her thoughts, her idea of surviving is by sharing and co-operating, as she believes that they have everything in the valley to be content. Loomis appreciates Ann's dedication, and tries to make helpful suggestions about the farming. He displays a tender delight of simple pleasures especially after Ann plays the piano for him: "This is the best evening I have spent." I believe that this suggests that Loomis had a deprived home life, and had no social life or leisure time for himself. An example of Ann's hopeful nature is when she innocently dreams of sharing her life with Mr.
