Intercultural communication essay

Russian universities are difficult. They train an elite for science and the civil service and math is very important and competition is intense. Russian students find American universities to be quite easy except, of course, for the problem of learning English, which is not a language that is widely taught or spoken in Russia.
             Perhaps the biggest difference between educational values between the United States and some of the countries that send students here is that in the United States is this: in the United States it is believed that there is a very clear connection between the performance of the student in college and the chances that the graduating student will have in the job market when he or she graduates. This is a different emphasis from, for example, European countries where it is assumed that the student is already part of an elite and will have no trouble finding a job. The university graduate in Europe is someone who will be expected to take a position in business, politics, or the civil service just because he or she has a university degree. This means that the American college student is intensely committed to maintaining a high grade point average (GPA) every semester that goes by whereas the typical European student doesn't have to worry about it so much. Of course, this attitude and many others will have to change if the foreign student coming to study in America is going to survive the experience and to go away again with the title Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. In the following cross cultural analysis of the foreign student experience we will look at the details of the process of survival of the foreign student in America in terms of many of the concepts found in our text. We will look at the stages that the typical foreign student has to go through. We will look at the language problem. We will also consider the concept of the "high context" and "low context" cultures.
