History of Feng Shui

             The major source book of Feng Shui is the I Ching or book of changes. The I Ching is a text rich with wisdom of the ancients. As a result, numerous aspects of Feng Shui's many related principals on symbolism, and on its view of the trinity of heaven, earth, and man takes its cue and associations from the trigrams placed around the eight-sided Pa Kua.(Figure 3)(Too, 67).
             Compass Formula Feng Shui bases its analysis on the I Ching's eight trigrams, and the placement of these trigrams around an eight sided symbol known as the Pa Kua (baah - gwa). The numerals are made up of yin, a broken sign (- -) and yang, a continuous sign (--). The broken and unbroken lines of the trigrams of the Pa Kua are symbols, and symbols embrace all the rituals, beliefs, and folklore of China. The symbols can be attributed to China's first legendary emperor, Fuxi (2852 BC) (Lip, 15). .
             Compass Feng Shui also used the nine grid symbol known as the Lo Shu magic square (Figure 4). Compass Feng Shui is an exact science requiring extreme and detailed accuracy, and for a long time, the computation methods of Compass Feng Shui stayed exclusively hidden. In an attempt to relate Landscape Chi flows with the Chi flow of the human body, Compass School Feng Shui makes use of the Pa Kua symbols and the Lo Shu square to correlate the individuals" birth dates, characteristics, and elements, with the currents of Chi in the Earths environment. The significance of the numbers on the Pa Kua comes from the sequence and placement of numbers around the Lo Shu magic grid (Figure 5). In this square, the numbers one to nine are arranged around the nine squares of the Lo Shu grid in such a way that any three numbers read in any direction add up to fifteen, whether calculated horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The number fifteen expresses the number of days it takes for a new moon to become full. Even numbers, which carry Yin energy, are placed at each corner of the square.
