Different Genders different Roles (& Payrolls).
Social diversity is all around us, and many of us are exposed to it almost on a daily basis. However, often our own personal experiences teach us the most about how differently races, ethnic groups, and genders are treated. From my own personal experience with diversity, gender differences have been the area that I have had the most first hand experiences with.
As far as gender differences and the roles of males and females go, at an early age I learned that society had certain expectations even for boys and girls. One of my first experiences involving the differences of these roles occurred when I did not obtain a role in an elementary school play possibly because of my gender. Although, I was only about 5 or 6 years old at the time, I recall the incident very clearly. The play involved characters such as bears, wolves, goats, flowers, and fairy's, and of course not knowing any better I wanted to be one of the "forest animals" and I raised my hand tirelessly each time an animal part was called out. However, each time a different student was chosen until all the forest animal roles had been taken, and only the flowers and fairies were left. It so happened that the teacher assigned the forest animal parts only to the boys, and the girls were assigned to be "flowers", and fairies. However, I am sure not too many parents would have wanted their little boys to be flowers and fairies. Moreover, not getting everything you want is really just a lesson in life that every child must learn, but this experience also made me question why men and women were given different roles and duties to perform, and it made me question why different genders were restricted or discouraged from pursuing certain hobbies and careers. .
Although, I always knew that society had different expectations for males and females, it was not until I grew into adulthood that these differences and inequalities truly became apparent to me.
