Samurai and religion

             A second important event is that the Minomoto clan took revenge in 1180. The leader established his own military government, known as the Kamakura Bakufu with a shogun at the head of it. The shogun collected an army of professional samurai and the real power was in hands of the Bakufu although the emperor and court still existed in Kyoto.
             In 1333 a civil war broke out and a period of total confusion followed. Untill end 16th century the situation was unstable and Japan was divided in little parts ruled by daimyos who were only interested in protection and extension of their own land. Samurai fought for their daimyo.
             Finally during the 16th century Ieyasu succeded to unite al little areas under 1 militaristic government. A new Bakufu was settled. This is the beginning of the Tokugawa-period with 250 years of peace.
             Bushido.
             With the emergency of the mercenary who later became named as samurai, a specific lifestyle accompanied. It is difficult to give an exact definition of Bushido but it is inextricably bound up with the evolution of the samurai class. Bushido is also known as the way of the samurai. Because the samurai belonged to the upper class, common people saw a lot inspiration in their lifestyle and values. Beginning 20th century, Inazo Nitobe wrote a remarkable book Bushido. The soul of Japan. wherein he tried to explain the unique character of Japan. About Bushido we read:.
             Bushido, then, is the code of moral principles which the knights were required or instructed to observe. It is not a written code; at best it consists of a few maxims handed down from mouth to mouth or coming from the pen of some well-known warrior or savant. (Nitobe,, p. 4-5).
             Nitobe further says that there were different sources which influenced Bushido. .
             In this respect I would like to make a little remark which is useful when looking for an organizing principle. Semiotics is a field that searches for mechanisms in culture.
