The Knight

The pilgrim I found to be most interesting in The Canterbury Tales was the Knight. The Knight was one of the few pilgrims depicted as entirely good and honorable. Everyone on the pilgrimage respected the Knight and felt complied to appreciate the tale when he was finished. In this paper, I plan to explain how the Knight's tale reflects himself and what his personality is like.
The Knight shows up in four parts of The Canterbury Tales, and every time he is mentioned it reveals more about what he is like as a person. The General Prologue tells us about how courageous and chivalrous he was. He was wise, humble and a perfect gentleman. " Who from the day on which he first began to ride abroad had followed chivalry " (Chaucer,159) this tells us that the Knight had devoted his life to living the way a true knight would. "As we recognize from 'The Knight's Tale', the ideal of gentillesse, constancy and devoted service which courtly romance holds up invites serious respect from poet and audience alike." (Winny, 84 ) .
His determination to live his life rooted in chivalry, following chivalric virtues, was admirable. Also, the Knight would fight quests against pagans instead of battles that would win him more glory and praise like fighting in national campaigns against French, Castilian, or Scottish Christians urged throughout the second half of the century because of his persistence in virtues (Strohm, 86 ). This also demonstrates the Knight's selflessness and commitment. The Knight's Tale reflects traditional values of honor in which there are strict codes of behavior which one must follow. .
All of the pilgrims, except the Knight, began their tale with a prologue which tells about themselves. The Knight not having a prologue for himself shows, once again, that he is devoted to living his life as an honorable knight. It would have been unhonorable to talk about himself and boast about the great things he has achieved.
