Causation in History


Instead some of his causation was based upon fate.
             Polybius decided the reasons for Rome's success were in their military and political procedures. He believed that these great characteristics were the cause of Rome being able to conquer most of the known world in only 52 years.
             Polybius gained credit for being the first historian to account for economic and social factors. However he was criticized for having a one dimensional cause for his events.

             D. Livy.
             Livy was a Roman who wrote in approx. the mid 30's he was very patriotic and pro Rome. He lived from 64 BC- 17AD. He wrote The History of Rome from its Foundation.
             Livy attempted to inspire those of the present to live a good life the way that those who had lived before in his 800 year histories. These histories attempted to detail the great deeds of heroes and villains previously of the Roman Empire. This is the same idea Herodotus used to write except of course Herodotus was pro Athens.
             Livy's account of the Roman Empire extended 142 books. His sources were based on other sources in the political world, and were often flawed. Livy accepted the involvement of the Gods in his causation. such as Roman King Tullus Hostilius died after offending the god Jupiter Elicius.

             E. Bede.
             Bede was an English monk, and a historian. He was born in 672AD and died in 735AD. He is most famous for his work The Ecclesiastical History of the English People. He is extremely religious and his writing is focused on making people better and increasing the Christian faith.
             Of course his strong religious belief influenced his causation. Everything that happened was either the work of satin or God. God directed all human action and some people stray and are in need of guidance. Our histories of Bede are very biased towards God. We often here of miracles, which many modern historians criticize the texts value to us, but in reality, without Bede's work we would know litte of the middle ages because of the low literacy rates.
