Of Mice and Men and the Theme of Loneliness

Of Mice and Men and the Theme of Loneliness.

Loneliness is the inevitable act that everyone have encountered at least once in their lifetime. In the Novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck gives many examples of loneliness of the California ranch life. The reader will encounter many examples of loneliness and isolation, mostly because of prejudice, discrimination, and simply the ignorance of not being able to see beyond what is presented. .
A friend is someone you can talk to when you"re going through hard times. A friend is someone that is willing to lend you a shoulder whenever you need one. A friend is someone that will cry and laugh with you. Everyone needs a friend. Without a friend a person will suffer from loneliness and solitude. George and Lennie had a special friendship. Even if Lennie was dull and stupid George cared for him. When Lennie got in trouble, George ran away with him, when Lennie was hungry George was the one that cooked him food. Although George will get mad and raise his voice every once in a while to Lennie, the reader knows that George cares for Lennie with protectiveness, patience, and pride. The ranchers are all very envious of the relationship George and Lennie have, because they do not have that kind of relationship in their own lives.
Early in the book, George sets the lonely mood by stating, "Guys like us that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world." He means that if they didn't have each other they would simply be like all the other ranchers that live in a world of loneliness. Even if they both have each other its is obvious that George and Lennie are very different. Lennie is big and strong, and dumb, while George is small and witty. Half the time Lennie doesn't even know what George is talking about as Crooks the black stable worker points out," Sometimes he talks, and you don't know what the hell he's talkin" about. Aint" that so?. Jus" talks on an" you don't know what the hell he's talking bout? Lennie and George have each other but sometimes they are on completely different levels, but Crooks says," But that don't make a difference.
