Angelas Ashes analyze and research

It is expected that on a Friday night after getting his wages Malachy would go out to the pubs and have a drink or two as "drinking pints is like a religious occasion" in Ireland (Thomason classics). However Frank's father often goes out to the pub and doesn't come home until the midnight hour when he is completely drunk and singing songs about the pride of this country. This in itself leads to nearly all of the problems that come to reach Frank. He begins to starve and never has any good clothes because his family has no money. It was hard for people to get work as it was in Limerick, but on the occasions that Frank's dad did get a job life didn't improve at all (Thomason classics). It was also his dad who first gave the family reason to dislike Frank. This is because they hated him for marrying their Angela. Frank was a Protestant from Northern Ireland, which doomed him from the start. This was almost as bad as being English, as "[they] were hated throughout Limerick for invading Ireland in the twelfth century. Protestants are associated with them since it was their forces that subjugated the Irish" (Thomason classics). Franks father was never there to provide for Frank or anyone else in his family. He often drank away their money for food and woke them up in the middle of the night and paraded them around as fools. It was all of these things that forced Frank to grow up quickly. He had to fill the shoes his father couldn't which is why it's no shock when "Frank is able to do what his father couldn't in giving his mom wages [that] she breaks down and cries"(Thomason classics). While it wasn't too hard to do what his drunken father couldn't it was still a hard thing to fill the shoes of the man of the house at such a young age. However frank had the willpower and compassion for his family to do it. He also couldn't put up with the way of life it was forcing him to live.
This lifestyle that Frank and his family had been forced into living was one of poverty.
