After serving in the Revolutionary War, at the age of 25, Marshall attended a course of law lectures at the College of William and Mary, conducted by George Wythe for a period of six weeks. George Wythe is the only lecturer that there is evidence of that John took notes on. Though James Madison was president of this college and allegedly John took a class of his in psychology, only notes were found on Wythe's lectures. During those six months, the college was close to deserted because of all the students and teachers in the army. John then continued his private study of law until his admission to practice later that year.
             Thomas, as well as John Marshall both fought in the Revolutionary War. Thomas was a trained fighter and during the Indian Wars he earned the rank of captain. At the outbreak of the war, Thomas was first a major in a regiment of minute men raised by the local areas of Culpeper, Orange, and Fauquier. By the end of the war Thomas was a colonel and the commander of Yorktown. John Marshall was chosen as lieutenant for the Culpeper Minute Men. He finished out the war as a member of a detail from the Light Infantry of Virginia under the control of Major Henry Lee. Both father and son fought a number of battles together, such as little Bunker Hill, Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. .
             John was a Captain in the war, and he and Lee worked very closely with one another. Marshall was also involved in battle during Benedict Arnold's invasion of Virginia in December, 1780, and January, 1781. Due to this event Marshall and Jefferson were not on the best of terms. During this time Jefferson was governor of Virginia and his actions were deemed questionable. The alleged story is that Jefferson fled from the scene without warning the others. Because of this Jefferson was almost impeached. .
             In the year 1782, sometime between Powles Hook and Marshall's last combat during Arnold's invasion, he met a woman named Mary Ambler.
