Analyse the way in which Baz Luhrmann interprets themes, cha

The tension is also built up visually by the use of short phrases and key words on screen. The speed of the camera also adds to the tension, as it gives the impression that something important is happening. Luhrmann manages to show the importance of religion in Romeo and Juliet by continuously flashing back to a large statue of Jesus situated between the Montague and Capulet buildings. This also gives the impression that God is the only thing holding the two families apart and stopping them from killing each other. This brings back the theme of fate and how religion was important as they believed that God controlled your destiny.
Finally Luhrmann uses imagery to hint as to the outcome of the film. "Take their Lives" appears on the screen and the "T" is shown as a cross. This links back to religion, Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross to save people. Romeo and Juliet must die to end the feud and save their families.
The opening scene is violent and action packed. It is set in a petrol station which immediately signifies danger. It presents the fight between the Montague and Capulet servants which the newspapers depict as "the third civil brawl". The brawl starts as an exchange of insults between the two families and thickens to include shooting and fire. The atmosphere is tense and full of suspense and Luhrmann draws the audience into the film by zooming in on the characters faces and devoting attention to their eyes.
In the scene big pauses and freeze frames are used to build up the suspense and when tension is high there is a deathly silence. The Camera shots start slow but as the fight gets nearer and becomes inevitable the camera gets faster. Frequent speech between the argument and actual fight build up the tension but this is then degraded by the not entirely intentional humour which lightens the scene and releases tension. The humour is important in this scene as it compares to the second fight scene which is incredibly serious and turns the whole mood of the story.
