Milton Hershey made a new recipe for milk chocolate in the 1900's. He sold the chocolate bars for 5 cents. He named the chocolate bar after himself. It became a very big business.
Milton Hershey was not always successful. When Milton first tried to sell his candy he failed. But he never gave up. He kept trying out new recipes until it made him a wealthy man.

Mennonites worked hard as farmers and dressed plainly. They did not play games, dance or go to parties. They did not even read books for fun. .
Milton's dad Henry was different. Henry liked to dream, read books and learn about new anything new like machines, crops and ways to get rich. None of Henrys big ideas ever worked. .
Milton's mom, Fanny did not believe in big ideas. She wanted hard work, so she taught Milton to work hard on the Hershey farm.
But Milton was like his dad and knew he would never be happy as a farmer.

At 13 years old Milton got a job running a printing press. He hated this job. So he dropped his straw hat into the machine. His boss fired him.

One time, he forgot to turn off the hot air blower for roasting peanuts and later that evening while at the theater next door he smell burning peanuts and had to run back to the shop.
