Contrasting poems of LONDON

'Earth has not anything to shew more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by a sight so touching in its majesty:'.
The imagery given by these three lines is astounding and instantly gives the narrators views on the spectacular sight of the city of London. This narrator clearly has an opposite view of London compared to Blake's. The use of 'fair' to describe the city gives images of beauty and also of it being in agreement with the rules of the world. It is apparent from the Lexis 'majesty' that he is in awe of this place, from this word there are images of the grandeur of London, also of the supreme power that he feels or sees in the 'mighty heart'. .
It is clear that both narrators have concentrated on different aspects of London. Blake's poem has its focus on what he sees whilst walking London's streets in the day and night-time which is in opposition to Composed upon Westminster Bridge where the speaker is looking out on an empty city in the silent early morning. These two viewpoints have a huge effect on the differences between each poem, as they are not literally written about the same thing. Wordsworth's narrator does not comment on the people of London but muses on the splendour of the Capital. The speaker in London however comes across as dismayed and very concerned about the pain and the lives of the people of London. The images throughout are of worn down human beings:.
             'The mind-forg'd manacles I hear'.
are of iron chains that keeping prisoner the people of this misery, there is not an escape for these them. In Wordsworth's poem there are encouraging images in the:.
             'Calm so deep'.
that the narrator feels when he views the city. Never has he felt so deep in a peaceful state as he does at this time - looking over London.
Looking then at these two poems it is unmistakable that in the eyes of the narrator from Composed upon Westminster Bridge, London is a magnificent place full of interesting monuments and promising hope for the future.
