Ballad of the sad cafe - summary

Cousin Lymon is completely dissimilar from Mrs. Amelia, the roles between them seem somehow reversed - she is more masculine than hunchback, who appears to be weak, tearful and delicate. Nonetheless he is the one who starts to dictate the rules and Amelia is obedient, does what he wants and eventually falls in love with the hunchback. So far the woman led her life solitary, except her ten-day marriage, selling her liquors but only allowing drinking it outside. Slowly this little hunchback changed her habits and convinced her first to put some tables in the store in order to alter it into a regular cafe in the end. The place started to be very popular, partly because there was nothing else to do during the evenings, partly because everyone was curious and craved some news about the relationship of this weird couple. At first the whole town was gossiping and laughing at Mrs. Amelia and Lymon, but later everybody got used to it. .
The second section at Carson McCullers" book starts four years later with the arrival of Mrs. Amelia's husband, Marvin Macy, who was released from prison. This part leads to a climax scene, which is a fight between Macy and his wife. .
Certainly ex-prisoner came back to the town in order to face the past, maybe to revenge and the first day he visited the cafe. The hunchback from the first sight is attracted to Macy:.
             .
"For since first setting eyes on Mavin Macy the hunchback was possessed by an unnatural spirit. Every minute he wanted to be following along behind this jailbird, and he was full of silly schemes to attract attention to himself. Still Marvin Macy either treated him hatefully or failed to notice him at all." (McCullers: 63).
Such bad treatment of hunchback could be considered a way of revenge on Mrs. Amelia, who could not stand that because she loved Lymon. On the other hand Cousin Lymon forgot about her completely since the arrival of Marvin Macy. Of course Macy took advantage of this affection toward him, he used hunchback, ate and drunk without paying and finally moved to Mrs.
