            In The Rocking-Horse Winner Paul was a small boy from a materialistic family whose character progressed from a timid and curious little boy trying to get his mother's attention to an obsession with trying to please her. Paul's mother was only interested in material possessions and uninterested in her children. She was in debt and continued to live beyond their means. Paul was starving for love and attention from his mother and tried to please her. He became enthralled with betting on horse racing and making money to satisfy his mother. Paul's obsession with trying to win his mother's affection ultimately lead to his demise. .
             Paul was the typical curious little boy. For example, he was curious as to why his mother was so unhappy. One day he inquired and his mother told him that they were the poor ones in the family because they were unlucky. Paul, in an attempt to please his mother told her that he was lucky. His mother belittled this idea causing Paul to feel rejected. Paul went in search of luck to gain his mother's approval. .
             Paul began going on frenzied journeys on his rocking horse; he wanted the rocking horse to help him find luck in order to please his mother. He began betting on horse races with Bassett, a family servant. On the first race he lost the money that he bet. After his uncle gave him a ten-pound note he started winning the races that he was betting on. Paul then told his uncle Oscar that he was betting on the horses and that he was sometimes sure of the winner. His uncle found the situation rather amusing and thought that the boy was simply fantasizing. He convinced his uncle to join him and Bassett in betting on the races. After a couple of wins at the track the uncle questions Paul about his knowledge of the winning horses. Paul does not revel his secret of how he knows who will win. Paul's uncle is then curious about what Paul is going to do with the money. Paul informs him that he started it for his mother in an attempt to please her.
