Glen MIller

I chose to listen to the Album In the Mood a digitally re-mastered recording of the Glen Miller Orchestra from 1941, which was taped on film as one set and then made into an audio recording with separate tracks. The track I chose to listen to was , the classic, In the Mood. This saxophone feature has one of the coolest and most knows saxophone licks ever. This song was written as a dance and jive song with its up beat tempo and quick rhythm. The repetition of the saxophones and the dynamics have stellar effect. Then the saxophones play and the trumpets answer back with a lingering pause which sounds good. Then, there is a Alto saxophone solo, which is of the elite solos. Next comes a quick trumpet solo with a lot of glissandos and scoops. After the solo, there is an obvious dynamic drop to piano, and then a huge crescendo back to double forte. The song is written in four-four in an eight bar blues. The drums play a dominate role in this song as does the bass. The soloist are most likely trying to impress because it is live in front of a crowd, and just the way they play there is an impression that they are standing out in front of the band. Most of the song is played with a swing feel on the hi-hat, and the bass notes are really plucked throughout the whole song. There is a shout chorus at the end which is the grand finally to the song, and just screams talent. The quality of the performance I would have to give a perfect ten, but I wish the song was a longer. The only think I wonder is what is the band "In the Mood" for?.
