What makes Baz Luhrmann's film Romeo and Juliet memorable?

Romeo and Juliet kill themselves and only in their deaths the conflict between the Capulets and Montagues is resolved.
True love can never survive if it is surrounded by hatred on earth. The only way that Romeo and Juliet could be together was truly in death and in heaven. These events were inevitable both were always destined to die as we are told in the prologue at the beginning of the film. By dying Romeo and Juliet's love will stay forever pure and it can never decay.
Baz Luhrmann keeps and emphasises certain elements. Both the film and play never explain why there is conflict between the families. This makes it more universal and appeal to a larger audience but unprovoked hatred also adds that extra twist to the structure of the narrative. There is also the idea that death brings about peace this is reflected in the bible where the death of Christ was for peace on earth. .
Luhrmann employs many ideas through the mise-en-scene. The civil war dividing a violent society is portrayed on screen through choice of clothes and locations.
The start of the film sets the scene. We see Verona Beach equally divided between the Capulets and Montagues with the statue of Jesus separating the families. Helicopter shots show the city as busy, industrialised and chaotic. Many of the shots are unsteady. The text that appears on the screen is the prologue and it is in black and white direct opposites and it is also contrasting colours to symbolise either Montague or Capulet. The news headlines also echo the prologue, which is repeated twice to give the audience a chance to get used to the language. Throughout the start there is a running metaphor of elements like fire and water symbolising natural conflict. This scene at the start is fast mtv style editing with shaky shots then steady cam.
The gas station scene replicates western films. We first see the Capulet car and the camera is positioned on the ground so that when the Capulets exit the car they seem overpowering.
