             The author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, attempts to demonstrate how ignorant society can act when it faces an individual who is different such as the "very old man-. Marquez had to face similar circumstances during his lifetime. He must have felt the pain that is afflicted on an individual who is not accepted by society's perception or "normal-. The first time that Marquez must have sensed this pain must have been when he was a young boy. Marquez's maternal grandparents did not accept his father, Gabriel Elgio Garcia. He was seen as different and was treated disrespectfully.
             As Marquez grew older, he himself had to cope with the idea of being different from what was perceived as the norm. He was identified as a "costeño- which meant that he was racially mixed and primarily the descendant of pirates and smugglers, with a mixture of black slaves. The formal, aristocratic, and racially pure Colombian's viewed Marquez and all "costeños- as ill advanced and with disdain. Marquez was susceptible to cruelty, abuse, and unacceptance because of his background. This became evident when Marquez moved to the big city of Bogota, Columbia at the age of twelve. He personally experienced oppression.
             While at boarding school, Marquez stood out among his classmates. He was an introvert who spent the majority of his time in isolation. He spent a significant amount of time writing poems and drawing cartoons. Since he was extremely serious and non-athletic, his classmates began to nickname him "the old man-. This might have been where Marquez must have picked up the idea to have his character "a very old man-. Marquez must have felt that his classmates were taunting him.
