Soon after his release he passed away.During the later Middle Ages a famine took place in Northern Europe. Between 1315 and 1317 the famine was widespread throughout Europe. In 1318 disease began to take it's toll on many flocks of animals such as sheep and cattle. In 1321 another famine fell upon the northern section of Europe due to bad harvests. This increased the rate of petty crimes as well as homelessness. In 1348, the horrific plague known as The Black Death hit Europe full force. Many lives were ruined and lost due this massive epidemic. This plague can be tracked from it's beginning down through Cicily, Italy, Germany and up throughout England. This disease was transmitted by fleas that nested on rats that were found in sandbags and food carried over seas on ships. The rats brought the plague with them when they exited the large cargo ships. There were two major forms of the plague that swept over Europe; Bubonic, which referred to the transfer of the disease from rat to human and Pneumonic, which was the transfer of the plague from person to person. The syptoms of this horrific ailment began with an apple-sized growth in the armpit, groin, or neck areas. This caused massive amounts of pain and agony among it's victims. If the growth was drained the victim had a good chance of survival. However, if the growth was not treated, the victim progressed to the second stage, in which black spots appeared due to bleeding under the skin. The third stage consisted of violent coughing and vomit containing large amounts of blood. The fourth and final stage would occur within two to three days of the third stage. This is the inevitable death. Approximately 1.4 million of the 4 million inhabitants of England during this period were expelled from life by The Black Death.
