"Education is a good thing, and more education is a better thing." (Karabell) This is what most Americans believe today. Most believe that everyone should go to college and get a higher education, that this will help them in their future and career. Society believes to be successful these days that a college degree must be obtained. .
Americans believe that a liberal education benefits students better than getting a specialized education. One student says, "The broader a person's interest, the more compatible he or she will be with other workers." (Jackson) Society expects one to be educated in all areas and be able to have critical thinking skills. Employers look at the person with the most education despite their experience. This is why most people have no choice but to spend money and maybe not even learn anything to get a degree so they can be considered for more jobs. The secretary of Labor Robert Reich says, "Get a good education. That has always been wise counsel, but today, unlike the days when young people could walk out of high school directly into steady mass-production jobs; those who disregard this advice do so at their increasing peril. Every economic reality that confronts the young is linked to education and skills." He also says, "A corollary to the earning-learning rule is that security no longer comes from sticking with a single company for 30 years but from maintaining a portfolio of flexible sills." ( Reich) Workers use to get specialized skills for one area for their job, now they are expected to have a diverse background of all types of skills. .
People use to have a choice on whether or not to go to college. Now it seems if you don't you will never be part of the upper class society. One man argues against and opposes the view of getting a higher education.
