There is a distinct political interpretation that we shall keep a separation of church and state. So what is the fuss about civil unions? All American's should be committed to supporting the rights and liberties of all people. Even same sex couples deserve to have there rights protected by law. They live in a union with shared material resources; pensions, guardian relation and they deserve equal protection under the law. We should grant full domestic partner benefits to gay and lesbian couples and leave the judgment of their behavior to their God. .
I feel that most of the rhetoric involved with the fear of allowing same sex unions involves religious theory, which has no place in passing laws protecting the rights of all. Those people who have religious objections to homosexual relationships based on their interpretation of sacred text should not be able to dictate secular law. Even some clergy agree that religion and politics do not mix. "Religious people should finally get over their all-too-apparent homophobia and reverse the discriminatory policy which says that homosexuality is an aberration. .Like heterosexual men and women, gays are God's children, capable ofbringing light and love to a planet whose darkness is caused not only by sinbut also by misguided judgmentalism." --Rabbi Leslie Bergson, Hillel Foundation, Claremont Colleges.
State sanctioned unions have many advantages including community property rights and the right to make end of life health care decisions for a spouse. There are no logical reasons that these rights should be kept from same sex couples. The constitution was put in place so that all citizens are treated equally under the law, and for years minority groups have struggled to push for social acceptance and equal protection. Civil unions enable couples to secure their affairs for economic, insurance, and tax purposes.
The debate to have the freedom to marry is not about religious marriages.
