At first, Chrysanthemums may seem to be a story about farming. As you read on you realize that it is about a thirty five year old depressed women looking for a man that loves and takes care of her.
Elisa Allen was a middle age women looking to settle down and start a family. The only quandary is her husband, Henry, which acts like a little lad.
"Henry put his joking ton. "There's fights tonight. How"d you like to go to the fights?"".
The only thing Elisa has close to kids are her chrysanthemums. She needs to feel like she accomplished something and feels good about her life. Henry seems to just want a spouse that cooks, cleans, and cares for the man of the house. Elisa does not want that, she wants someone she can have conservations with, someone that listens to what she has to say.
"A squeak of wheels and plod of hoofs came from the road. Elisa looked up." It was a salesmen and she had a strong barrier to people trying to take her money, but when he noticed her chrysanthemums that barrier went down. She enjoyed the salesmen's presents because she had someone to talk to and he would listen. Even thought he was just listening to get the sale. .
The chrysanthemums to Elisa, are her way to talk and express her feelings, there her acting husband. Even though Elisa didn't want to have her knives and scissors sharpened she did, so she could have someone to gossip with. The salesman was listening to her and you could tell she like the attention by some statements like. "She was kneeling on the ground looking up at him .The man's eyes narrowed." Statements like this, throw me off and make me wonder if she likes this salesman.
Chrysanthemums is about a middle age women wanting to settle down and have a family. The only family she has right now is her Chrysanthemums. Her husband does not care about her. He is still wild and does not want to start a family. What Elisa should do is find some guy that likes to have fun but also wants a family.
