Eat Bulaga! is a noontime variety show which started out on July 29, 1979 in Channel 9, then moved in to Channel 2 and finally stayed with Channel 7 where it is currently being aired from Monday to Saturday. The show offers fun and entertaining game portions, search segments, and product launches which are appealing to both the "elite" and the "masa". Magandang Tanghali Bayan (MTB) is yet another noontime variety show, this time by Channel 2, which airs from Monday to Saturday. Its target audience is the C, D, and E crowd or the masa. Just like Eat Bulaga!, and aside from the fun and humor it offers, one of the salient key points of the show is its goal to help the masses, generally the less fortunate, via its games, which give out large prizes. And recently, Channel 2 has revitalized Magandang Tanghali Bayan into Masayang Tanghali Bayan (still MTB). It has been reported that Magandang Tanghali Bayan is lagging in the ratings department. In contrast, rival show Eat Bulaga topped a recent survey on 100 shows being aired by local networks. With this development, Channel 2 planned to replace Magandang Tanghali Bayan with a new one, Masayang Tanghali Bayan, and with a new set of hosts. But Eat Bulaga still continues to enjoy the greater portion of the viewer ratings.
Both shows have similar goals - to entertain, to help and to reach out especially to the masa. If this is so, then why does one win over the other? Why is the one show more favorable to the audience than the other one? I know that we have our own preferences but I think that there really are important factors which affect the two rival shows" ratings. Why is it that, even after refurbishing the old MTB, Eat Bulaga is still on top of the rival show?.
One big factor that affects a show's performance is its hosts. In an entertainment/variety show, the hosts must be true, sincere, down-to-earth, fun, and spontaneous.
