With historical background and throughout the last decade the issue of weather or not feminism had made a positive impact on society had raged. Although the issues are complex , and the opposition argues that feminism does not provide a positive direction for society for the following reasons. First, negative social change andsecondly, the breakdown of family. These reasons do have merit but I do contend that feminism does provide a positive direction in society for these compelling reasons, one, the upward social change and second, the equality of genders. The United States from pre colony days to the present have progressed through immense changes, the upward social movement as well as the equality of sexes has had an amazing effect on society today. .
The Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines feminism as the theory of political economic and social equality of the sexes and the organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interest. One hundred years ago only few women worked outside the home, however presently 75% ( Manchester,pg 2) of women do so. Post World War I the number of women involved in military services and jobs in the community slowly increased. Men being away and at war for so long forced women to help with the family income as well as home care for family members. Men started to loose their title as the sole bread winner and provider. Not only have historical events changed our world so has the evolution in time. A women position in the family has typically (in the past) been at home. Women were left to raise and care for their children while men were working or away. The female gender has always been known to be the nurturing parent of the family. The parent that would take care of the social and emotional growth of the child, not to mention the teaching of personal needs of the individual child's growth. The female has also been the one parent with the responsibility of seeing that the school age child was well read and homework was complete.
