Giles, fighting for a cause

Through out history groups have been blindly accused for the faults and misfortunes in society. Groups like Jews who were persecuted for the financial deterioration of Germany or individuals who were persecuted because they used their right for free speech during the McCarthy trials. No matter the cause these groups faced horrible punishment and embarrassment yet they appeared to be functional members of society. One of the most famous examples of this blind persecution is the Salem witch trials. During this period in our history members of communities would be accused of witch craft and would face punishments, however these accusations would be based on spiritual and biblical based evidence rather than factual evidence. Since the accusations were not based on realistic evidence members of Salem began to question the idea of witches. Certain members in the town of Salem began to speak out against the allegations in order to stop the chaos. However these members most first change their attitudes in order to be better heard. In his play, "The Crucible" Arthur Miller uses the character Giles to show how an antisocial individual who possesses little sway on a community's opinion may recognize faults in the community causing him to act heroically in order to be heard. .
In the beginning Arthur Miller introduces Giles as an annoying fool who does little to help the community. When Giles first enters the play he begins to talk to the well spoken Hale about his curiosities. There he asks Mr. Hale about, "Martha, [his] wife. I have waked at night many a time and found her in the corner, readin"of a book. Now what do you make of that?"(p37) Miller uses Giles first words to show how foolish he is, by asking a witch hunter, Hale, about his wife's peculiar habits. This quote implies that Giles is rather dim witted because of his questions which may cause his wife to be accused of witch craft.
