Comparison

Neustatter seems to lack common sense and ethics when she is discussing this issue; we are trying to protect the community from child killers and all she cares about is how the lives of the killers will be affected. After comparing the two texts I found out that Fergus uses emotional and passionate language, which is more appealing to other parents and caring people in the society who don't want to see any harm happen to anyone. This type of language is rarely found in Neustatter's article. The little of that language that is available in that article is trying to persuade the public to protect child killers from the "savage- community.
Very little logos were used by both writers to justify their argument, but Neustatter used more facts to justify her point of view and explain the situation than Fergus did in her website. Neustatter wrote: "I have spent the past 18 months inside a young offender's institution and talking with inmates for a book I am writing."" (Para 5). Although it seems like she has more experience and credibility in dealing with convicts, she is very soft on cruel and vicious people. On the other hand, Fergus did not place facts except the obvious ones; for example that her son was murdered by these two children and she wants to keep them in prison. She uses this to support her argument as she is sending a message to parents telling them to support her mission. She doesn't want them to some day be able to feel the pain she felt and that's why she is asking for their sympathy and help to prevent this from happening. Fergus states that freeing these murderers would first send a message across to the world that such a murder could go unpunished and second, that the new identities that they will give to the murders to protect them would be a large sum of money which is to be taken out of tax payers' money. Fergus, in her website states: "If Thompson and Venables served a just sentence they could be released without the need to spend more public money on protecting them- (Fergus).
