PAULS CASE

When reading a story, there are many elements that amalgamate in order to make the story interesting and appealing to the reader. The setting, point of view, character, or even style and voice are just a few of the components that interplay in order to build a considerable part of a story. In some instances, however, one of these elements might take priority over the others in order to make a strong point, or to make something evident to the reader. In the story "Paul's Case," I would agree that the character of Paul is what makes the reading as interesting and exciting as it is. .
As far as his physical appearance goes, "Paul was tall for his age and very thin, with high cramped shoulders and a narrow chest. His eyes were remarkable, the pupils were abnormally large and had a glassy glitter."(pg.109) Paul is in high school, so we can deduce that he is a teenager. The first impression we get is that he is a troublemaker because in the beginning of the story we find Paul in the principles office having a meeting with his teachers. He has an arrogant attitude about him, symbolized by the red carnation flower he wore. So, in the beginning of the story we get the feeling that he is just your average high school troublemaker. .
As we read on further we find that Paul is a very complex character indeed. He lives in a run down house with his father and he is not satisfied with his present lifestyle. Since Paul works as an usher at Carnegie Hall, he gets a chance to see how the rich live and he realizes that this is the kind of life that was meant for him. It's ironic that Paul wants to live a rich and refined life but the way he goes about it is by stealing and lying. We also realize that these things really don't bother him, because after all was said and done he was very satisfied with the way things had gone and he even thought to himself that if he could, he would do the same thing tomorrow.
