Aldous Huxley chose wisely when he entitled his novel A Brave New World. During this story that portrays an interesting, unique view of the future, there are several elements in which this world envisioned by Huxley could be considered "brave." Characters such as Mustapha Mond are able to see the affects of this world first-hand because they are aware of how people used to live before the Ford years. For instance Mustapha sees the harmful affects that devoting our security in feelings and emotion to a drug can have. The new world is a brave one in how people approach certain determining factors including sex, drugs, and the new field of breeding humans.
People in Huxley's new World State take a different approach to sex and relations as in the past. Children are taught early on using certain sexual games to act on certain attractions and be active with their sex lives. People are bred to believe in having many partners during their life. This ensures that no one gets attached emotionally to anyone else, an event that could lead to hurt feelings, which is what people are trying to avoid in this new Utopian state. This attitude is portrayed in a scene between Lenina and Fanny Crowne in which Fanny chides Lenina for being involved in a relationship with Bernard for nearly four months. Fanny encourages her to be more promiscuous as a virtuous member of the World State should be. .
In order to control people's emotions and other aspects that could threaten the stability of the World State, an approach is taken that was once a topic looked upon with trepidation by humans in the form of drugs. Six years of pharmaceutical research yield a new drug called Soma. Soma, the perfect drug, is used frequently by all members of the world state to ease their mind and keep them sane. Drug use is no longer looked down upon by society and is actually considered a necessary, moral act. Drugs are used to control many things including hormones.
